1887 - 1899 - The Department of Railways and Canals expropriates.66 of an acre of the King's Road Reserve for the Cape Breton Railway. From 1887 - 1899 the railway line is constructed. This action divides the homes of the residents of the King's Road reserve from the shores of the Sydney Harbor, where they fish.

This audio recording is an excerpt of a speech that was done by Peter Christmas at a meeting of the Old Sydney Society. Peter is the son of the late Chief Ben Christmas.

In these excerpts, Peter describes some of the activities that his father had to undertake as the Chief of Membertou and how this impacted himself, and the larger Mi’kmaq community as a whole. Issues he discusses include centralization, King’s Road Reserve and the Indian Day School.

Peter Christmas was an educator for many yeasr in the public school system and the Executive Director for the Mi'kmaq Association of Cultural Studies for over 20 years.
