Petition Document - January, 1907

The area of North Sydney was home to a Mi'kmaq community for many years, up until 1917. The community was located near present day Pottle's Lake but the land that the community was situated on never received Indian Reserve designation. during the late 1800's most other Mi'kmaq communities were being designated as reserve lands, under the Indian Act, however North Sydney never received such. It appears that the lands the community was residing on were lands belonging to the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company.

What we know about the community is that it had been here for many years and that Indian Affirs decided to relocate the Mi'kmaq from here aroudn the same time period that they were trying to re-locate the Mi'kmaq from the King's Road Reserve; late 1800's to the early 1900's.

There is a petition document that is dated January, 1907 and is signed by 24 malel heads of families residing at North Sydney during this time. The petition was drafted and sent by A.C. Ross, who was the Member of Parliament for the area, to Indian Affairs, requesting a schoolhouse and lands here for the community. Unfortunately, Indian Affirs did not agree to purchase the land for the Mi'kmaq, even though it appeasr that the Nova scotia Stel Company was willing to sell the land at that time to the Mi'kmaq.

There is also a List of Names that have been taken fro various census documents and it identifies at least 50 people residing here in 1911.

Indian Affairs successfully removed all of the Mi'kmaq from here by 1917 and placed them at varuious reserves througout Nova Scotia.
