Within this section we have provide an array of various historical documents realting to the events and people of the community of Membertou. These documents include old issues of the Micmac News and various articles from the Micmac News specific to individuals from the commuity. As well, we have included information in regards to the King's Road reserve, The North Sydney Mi'kmaq community and an article from Cape Breton Magazine on Frank Doucette. It is our hope that these docuements provide you with a greater understanding of the community of Membertou.

Barry Moore is the newly appointed Band Manager at Membertou, a combination of welfare officer and band Manager. The Membertou Band is the second community to take over self government in the Cape Breton area. Eskasoni took over their own programs last year with a full time staff of four persons. The City of Sydney Standing Committee at the recent meeting was told that the services provided to the residents of Membertou were not satisfactory.
To date no street lights have been put up, no street maintenance given, delay on a $15,000.00 capital project, and poor Policing services. The committee under the chairmanship of Deputy Mayor Charlie Palmer reviewed the items to some extend as was prepared to bring these to the attention to the City’s Department Heads.
The meeting was called by Chief Roy Gould as a result of a recent Band Meeting held at Membertou and the dissatisfaction expressed by the residents of the Membertou Reserve.
In attendance at the meeting were: Chief Roy Gould, Councilors Donnie Marshall, John Ginnish, Education Committee members and the Band staff. On behalf of the City of Sydney, Deputy Mayor Charlie Palmer, Alderman James Lovelace, Elizabeth Vaughan and Vince MacNeil attended the meeting.

Roy Gould, Elected the youngest Indian Chief at age 21, resigns as Chief of the 250 residents of the Membertou Indian Reserve, Sydney.
The resignation submitted to Mr. H.S. MacNeil, stated that Mr. Gould’s resignation is effective June 31, 1971. The youngest Chief felt that he could not devote the time required in order to run an efficient office for the people of Membertou. He expressed thanks to the Indian Affairs Department and the people of Membertou for the kind co-operation extended to him and the Council.
Chief Gould held the position as Chief for the past three years. He was re-elected Chief June 1970 for the second term. The Bi-Elections for Membertou are scheduled to be held July 14th, 1971.
