1900 - January 15th - Grand Chief John Denny writes to the Indian Agent, Reverend Dr. R.P. Cameron that he and the other Mi'kmaq will not sign the surrender that Indian Affairs has provided to them, as the amount of dollars they will receive is very small and will not be enough to purchase a 5 acre piece of land. They ask for a guarantee that they will get 5 acres of land if they surrender the King's Road Indian Reserve.

Membertou is a thriving community located on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The Mi’kmaq people of Membertou and their ancestors have lived in this area since time immemorial, long before the arrival of the Europeans to these lands.

Membertou is a thriving community located on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The Mi’kmaq people of Membertou and their ancestors have lived in this area since time immemorial, long before the arrival of the Europeans to these lands.

The culture and history that the Mi’kmaq of Membertou maintain are gifts that have been passed on to them from their ancestors. Their oral history and traditions are significant and unique when considering Indigenous experiences.

The Community of Membertou and its Elders recognize the importance of sharing their exclusive culture and history will all people, and realize that this sharing and celebration must come from the community itself.

The Membertou Heritage Park consists of a five-acre site that offers a living history of the people of Membertou. A large indoor exhibit and program area offers the visitor full immersion to an ancient culture. Outdoors, the visitor will experience traditional medicine gardens, demonstration areas, storytelling and performances in the amphitheatre.

The Park will honour the spirituality and the strength of the Membertou people telling the story of Membertou, educate and share the Mi’kmaq culture and assist in preserving the Mi’kmaq heritage.
